Go, or most commonly known as Weiqi or Chinese chess, originated in China more than 4000 years ago. It is believed to be the oldest board game continuously played to the present day. The unique black and white playing pieces are called stones, and the checked chess boards also became an iconic aesthetic element in Chinese history.
This handtufted wool carpet is inspired by this ancient Chinese game. From afar, it appeared to be only black and white, but upon a closer look, the intricate details in texture start to show. The black and white 3-D circular detail pays homage to the “stones” while the linear design mimics the grid seen on the chess board.
With an iconically Chinese visual identity, this monochrome wool carpet is part of our Chinese Study collection. Our designers are inspired by different objects and elements found in ancient Chinese designs. They paid close attention to spaces used by scholars for enlightenment. Subtle yet elegant, the color palette makes it easy to position in a variety of settings, from a spacious living room to a home office. The design brings a sense of calmness, which is vital to the spirit of Chinese chess, to a home. It asks us to stop for a second in our busy lives and discover an inner sense of serenity.
